The Kwara State House of Assembly has expressed its dissatisfaction over the slow pace of work by the contractor handling the on-going Dangote- Offa Garage Road construction.
To this end, the House has directed its committee on works and transport to invite the state Commissioner in charge of the project, the project consultant and the contractor, to appear before the House within the next two weeks for necessary clarification on the situation.
The Speaker, Alhaji Babatunde Mohammed who gave the directive during an oversight inspection visit to the project, state that this became necessary in view of the huge amount of money already expended by the state government on the road project.
Alhaji Mohammed noted that the intention of the state government to embark on the construction of the road was as a result of its strategic importance to decongest traffic situation within the heart of the city and to provide unhindered access to those passing through the state from other states.
The Project consultant, Engineer Bashiru Lawal had earlier told the lawmakers that contract for the construction of the road was awarded to Sojet Construction Nigeria Limited in April, two thousand and eight at a cost of over one point one eight billion naira, out of which, eight percent of the contract sum had been paid by the state government.
Engineer Lawal said the construction of the six lanes, four point three kilometer road, also involved two bridges, expected to be completed by the end of the month.
He stated that work on the project has only reached about forty percent despite the fact that the contractor had been mobilized three times by the state government.
A representative of the contracting firm on site confirmed eight percent of payment by the state government and assured that the firm and the supervising ministry would resolve their differences soon.
The legislators who spoke on the issue frowned at the attitude of the firm for its failure to handle the project as expected by the government.
