Senate passes resolution empowering Jonathan as acting President

The Senate today passed a resolution empowering Vice President Goodluck Jonathan as acting president.

The Senate passed the resolution after a short closed door session.

Senate President, David Mark, who announced the resolution, said the upper chamber had resolved that Doctor Jonathan should henceforth start acting as President and Commander-In-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federation in compliance with section one hundred and forty five of the constitution.

The Senate also resolved that the Vice President would, however, cease to function as acting president as soon as President Umaru Yar’Adua transmits a letter to the National Assembly to inform it of his return from his medical trip.

Senator Mark said the Senate decision was guided by the provision of the constitution.

He added that science and technology had solved the political imbroglio caused by the confusion created by President Umaru Yar’Adua’s refusal to transmit a letter to the National Assembly of his medical trip in compliance with section One hundred and forty five of the constitution.

The Senate had earlier passed a resolution asking President Yar’Adua to transmit a letter of his medical trip to Saudi Arabia to the National Assembly, while it urged Nigerians to continue to pray for his quick recovery.
