The Senate President, Senator David Mark, has warned the new military leadership in Niger Republic to return the country to democracy or face Nigeria's wrath.
Senator Mark gave the warning in Abuja during the debate on a motion entitled ``Truncation of Democracy in Niger Republic,'' moved by Senator Anthony Manzo from Taraba State and thirty other senators.
Most senators who contributed to the debate on the motion called for the closure of Nigeria's borders against Niger Republic, noting that Nigeria is the mainstay of Niger's economy.
Other senators however blamed Mamadu Tandja for the coup.
At the end of the debate, the Senate condemned the coup as well as Tandja's decision to extend his tenure.
It urged the coup leader to immediately begin a process of returning the country to a democratically elected government.
The Senate also urged the international community to put pressure on the coup leader.
It called on civil societies and the media to be more proactive in the defence of democracy and good governance.
