Speaker, Kwara State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ali Ahmad says that the House will liaise with the Executive to ensure that the old glory of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area is restored in no distant time.
Ahmad gave the assurance while hosting the State NYSC Coordinator, Mr. Amaefule Remigius and his team who were on a courtesy visit to his office recently, expressing dismay at the state of facilities in the camp.
He recalled with nostalgia that the camp which was established about 30 years ago was rated best among others in the country with numerous infrastructural facilities to make the corp members and participants’ stay a worthwhile.
The Speaker added that the NYSC scheme has been of immense value and advantage to the country as it greatly assisted in exposing students from various backgrounds, diverse cultures and different ethnic groups to the other side of the country.
He added that without the scheme, lots of graduates would have remained in their respective local areas without having access to various localities to garner the required experience which is very different to what they are being taught in the school.
Ahmad, however, noted that despite the situation of things at the camp, Kwara remained one of the very few states that enjoy peace and harmony in Nigeria.
Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mr. Amaefule Remigius had said that the orientation camp was in dire need of government’s attention and called for various stakeholders’ intervention in order to uplift the camp.
Remigius lamented that the camp has now deteriorated that graduates who were posted to Kwara have to be sent to Oyo State for their orientation.
He stated that Yikpata Camp is very ideal because of its location, therefore it was very pertinent that it was made habitable.
