2019 Elections: Governor Ahmed for Senate, tasks INEC on fairness

On the back of a largely successful tenure, Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulfatah Ahmed has signaled his intention to vie for the Kwara South Senatorial Ticket on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the forth coming general elections.

This is just as the Governor charged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure the conduct of free, fair, credible and generally accepted elections in 2019.

Governor Ahmed, who announced his entry into the Senatorial contest via his twitter and facebook accounts, said he had picked up the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Nomination Form for the Senatorial Primary Election.

“In response to calls by my people and in keeping with my strong desire to upscale the excellent work we have done in all three zones of the state, through effective, purposeful representation, I have picked up the PDP nomination form for Kwara South Senatorial District, Dr. Ahmed said.

Ahead of the primaries, Governor Ahmeds development strides across the state, including the Kwara South Senatorial district, stand him in good stead with the people and have highly boosted his chances of clinching the ticket and winning the election in the 2019.

His numerous accomplishments in the zone include the International Vocational Technical Entrepreneurship College, Ajase Ipo, the new Kwara State University Satellite Campus at Osi, as well as commendable strides in the roads, health, energy, water, education and informal sectors.

Governor Ahmed has severally defended his recent movement to the PDP on the grounds that his former party offered limited access to platforms for securing benefits for the people of Kwara State as a whole.
His Senatorial ambition is seen in the light of his strong determination to better represent his people, and provide inclusive leadership in Kwara South.

Meanwhile, the Governor has charged the Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) to ensure the conduct of free, fair, credible and generally accepted elections in 2019.

While giving the charge in his office at the Government House, Ilorin, when he received the state Resident Electoral Commission (REC), Mallam Garba Attahiru Madami, he stressed the need for the electoral body to shun any act that could discredit the election.

He also advised the body to adhere strictly to the rule of the game and not to allow itself to be used by any political party to achieve selfish goal but be transparent in its dealings.

“INEC should ensure that election results the true feelings of all Nigerians and desist from tampering with the results to favour one party against others,” he said.

Governor Ahmed also advised electorate to collect their Permanent Voters’ Card to contribute their quotas in ensuring entrenchment of good governance in the country.

He also assured of his government’s resolve to accord necessary support to the body through provision of necessary logistics in order to ensure free, fair and generally accepted elections in the state.

The State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Mallam Garba Attahiru Madami had in his remarks told the governor about his intention to conduct free, fair and credible election in the state.

He explained that when he resumed office ,he discovered that Kwara had poor voters’ registration compared to other states of the federation.

Madami disclosed that total voters’ registration as at August 31,2018 was 1,407,927 while Permanent Voters Card collected as at 2015 were 980,425, saying that uncollected PVC were 264,823 and those yet to be printed were 427,402.
