Nine first class traditional rulers in Kwara North Senatorial District are prevailing on the President of the Senate and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State, Dr Bukola Saraki, to concede the governorship ticket of the party to the district, The Herald has learnt.
The monarchs reportedly told Saraki that the PDP would secure the support of the people should an aspirant from the zone be considered for the gubernatorial ticket.
A PDP governorship aspirant and member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aliyu Ahman-Pategi, confirmed the meeting between Saraki and Kwara North traditional rulers on the sidelines of his formal declaration for 2019 governorship race held at the open field of the Kwara State Stadium Complex, Ilorin.
He said the general feeling of the people of Kwara North was that power be shifted to the zone for equity and sense of belonging.
Ahman-Pategi, however, clarified that he was not joining the race on accounts of the call that it was the turn of his senatorial district to produce but because he has the capacity to take over the mantle of leadership.
The legislator boasted that he is the most experienced politically among other aspirants that had indicated interest to contest governorship seat on the platform of the PDP.
“In every single part of Nigeria, there are good candidates and there is no yardstick for choosing the best candidate. This is a democracy and there are over 80 political parties. Even within each political family like APC, PDP, Labour Party, you would still have contestants.
“But it is a family affair, only one person would emerge. That person that emerges, we hope he would do the will of the people by doing what is primary to every government, which is to make the best improvement in the lives of the citizenry by coming out with people friendly and pro-poor policies.
“I can assure you that the issue of power shift to (Kwara) North is with my people. Certainly, I’m aware that all the nine first class Emirs of the North have gone to ask the leader to consider Kwara North in 2019, and that is the feeling of my people. That all political parties in Kwara State should ensure that they present gubernatorial candidates from Kwara North.
“But I am not contesting as a result of zoning. I’m contesting because I have got the capacity. I have the fear of God in me. I have the intellectual capacity and equally I’m a very patient person. I believe that the reason Kwara North is saying they want it is because that is the feeling of the electorate in Kwara North.
“And in politics, like the leader told me personally, I want to win my election. Whoever is the most popular candidate would emerge. It is not about capacity. Everybody that has come out to contest under our platform of PDP has got capacity. And I will tell you for the fact that in Kwara today, in terms of those that have come out under the PDP family, I am the most experienced politically because I am a three term member of the House of Representatives”, Ahman-Pategi said.
During the declaration, the legislator disclosed that he had consulted widely among stakeholders prior to his joining the race formally, saying that he has a lot to offer for the development of the state.
He said his administration would focus on six points agenda, which include agriculture, health, education, employment generation, women and youth development and maintenance of infrastructure if entrusted with the mandate of the people.
A former state Head of Service, Alhaji Dabarako Mohammed, urged the people to support the aspiration of the governorship aspirant, saying he’s known to be very reliable.
Mohammed also appealed to the people to join force with the PDP, which he described as a party of salvation.Nine first class traditional rulers in Kwara North Senatorial District are prevailing on the President of the Senate and leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara State, Dr Bukola Saraki, to concede the governorship ticket of the party to the district, The Herald has learnt.
