The good run of Kwara United FC in the on-going Aiteo Cup competition has been applauded by the two Kwara State Guber aspirants, Rt. Hon. Dr. Ali Ahmad and Hon. Zakari Mohammed Lafia.

Kwara United FC reached the quarter-final stage of the nation’s Premier Club competition after coming tops at the AgegeCenter, beating both Abia Warriors and Rivers United 5-1 and 1-0 respectively.

Ahmad, who promised N250,000 per goal against Katsina United described the success as one of the best things to have happened to the state’s footballing club in recent years.

He said that it has been over 20 years Kwara United reached the former Challenge Cup competition’s latter stages, stressing that it is an indication that government and the management were doing something right at the club.

The governorship aspirant, while congratulating the football team in a message issued by his Special Assistant on Media, ShuaibAbdulkadir at the weekend, noted that it could not have come at a better time.

Also, Hon. Mohammed, who was former Commissioner for Sports and Youth Development in the state, and who had managed the club before said that the team has all it takes to win the trophy, to justify the tremendous support from the stakeholders in the state, as well as the huge financial backing of the government.

The first time any Kwara team reached the final of the competition which was introduced in 1945 was in 1976, when the defunct Alyuf-Salam Rocks played and lost the final 2-0 to Enugu Rangers.

Kwara United FC will take on Katsina United FC in the quarter-final match on Wednesday, beginning from 4.00pm.
