The Nigeria Rowing Canoe and Sailing Federation (NRCSF) on Monday said that the body had concluded plans to organise the second edition of the National Para – Canoeing and Sailing Championships in April.
The federation’s secretary, Olubunmi Oluode, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the championships would hold from April 4 to April 6 at the BICS Boat Club in Lekki.
She said that the competition which had its maiden edition in 2018 was organised by the federation to popularise the sport.
She added that it was also to prepare the country’s athletes adequately ahead of the upcoming 2020 Paralympic Games.
“The federation board led by retired Rear Adm. Festus Porbeni has put everything in place to ensure a successful competition for all the participants across the country.
“The maiden edition held in 2018 was geared toward developing para-sport in Nigeria and was also designed to engage the physically challenged in the sports,” she said.
Oluode told NAN that 30 medals would be up for grabs at the competition, while two technocrats from the International Canoe Federation would be on the ground to classify participants.
She added that the classification was in preparation for the forthcoming Paralympic qualification seminar and competition slated for August 2019 in Tokyo, Japan.
In the meantime, the scribe said that the federation had donated an automatic wheelchair to Toyin Alayode because of her impressive performance at the Africa Para-Rowing Championship which held in Tunisia in February.
The secretary said that the Oyo State-born athlete won a silver medal at the highly competitive championship, stressing that the gesture would encourage other athletes to perform better.
